Chili Moi: The 1930s Chili and Spaghetti Fusion from a Watkins Cookbook
Is it chili? Is it spaghetti? It’s Chili Moi! Today on the Old Cookbook Show, we’re diving into a fascinating recipe from a 1938 Watkins Cookbook. This unique vintage recipe combines ground beef, savoury spices, and beans with a surprising twist: spaghetti mixed right into the chili.
Watkins was a massive door-to-door and mail-order company known for its spices and household products. Their cookbooks are famous for a wide variety of recipes that utilized their extensive spice line. In this episode, Glen explores the history of this "Tex-Mex" style convenience food, which even predates packaged dinner boxes from companies like Gebhardt's.

The history of the Watkins Company and their 1930s cookbooks.
How to make Chili Moi (or Chili Me) using ground beef, navy beans, and spaghetti.
A look at vintage spice blends: Chili powder, paprika, celery salt, and onion seasoning.
Glen’s tips for browning meat and simmering for maximum flavour.
