I stumbled into this meal by messing up a recipe for pasta e fagioli, the Italian soup made with beans and pasta. Many years ago, I was cooking it for the first time and, seeing the word pasta in the title, instinctively reduced the liquid into a sauce rather than leaving it as a soup. The result was this incredibly glossy sauce that tasted the way a soffritto smells.
