Food prices continue to climb, but eating well does not have to mean spending a fortune. Today we look at how to cook like a king on a working man’s budget by using overlooked cuts, simple techniques, and old school kitchen wisdom that still works.

We dig into properly browning ground beef, grinding your own brisket or chuck, braised beef cheeks, pork shoulder, pork belly, chicken thighs and drumsticks, homemade deli meats, soups, stocks and simple meals like sausage, potatoes and peppers. These are inexpensive ingredients that can produce incredible food when you know how to work with them.

I also share memories from my Depression-era grandmother’s kitchen and the meals she used to feed a large family on very little money. Pierogies, blinis, stuffed peppers and cabbage, pork and sauerkraut, fish cakes, bean soup, potato soup, bread pudding and more. Nothing went to waste. By the time Grandma was done with a bone, it was basically a dog biscuit.

Finally, we talk about staying healthy even if you don't eat low carb. Make your own bread, cook from scratch, use whole ingredients, avoid seed oils and highly processed foods, and keep your carb intake reasonable. Good food can still be affordable, healthy and damn good.
