You know that moment when dinner is ready and you realize there are no buns in the house? That’s exactly when these homemade hot dog buns shine.
Made with instant yeast, warm water, flour, eggs, oil, maple syrup, and salt, they deliver a soft texture and golden finish without the long wait most bread recipes require. They’re sturdy enough for loaded hot dogs, easy enough for beginners, and flexible enough to be shaped into sliders, hamburger buns, or sub rolls.
I always remind people that homemade doesn’t have to mean complicated. This recipe keeps things SIMPLE, QUICK, and achievable, even on busy days.
Minoo’s Pro Tip: Add extra flour gradually during kneading so the dough stays soft and workable.
Here’s the full recipe:
Prep Time: 25 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 40 minutes
Servings: 8 Buns
Ingredients
2 Tbsp Instant Yeast
1 Cup Warm Water
⅓ Cup Avocado Oil
2 Tbsp Maple Syrup
2 Eggs (1 of them is for egg wash)
3 Cups All Purpose Flour (up to 1/2 cup more while kneading)
1 Tsp Salt
Sesame Seeds (Optional)
Instructions
1. Add instant yeast and warm water to a bowl, and give it a quick mix. Add in avocado oil, maple syrup, and 1 egg. Mix that all together.
2. Add in flour and salt mix and then transfer to a flat surface and knead for 3-5 minutes. If your dough is sticky add up to 1/2 cup more flour.
3. Do not let your dough rise AT ALL.Divide into 8 pieces, and shape each dough into a ball. To shape into hot dog buns, roll each ball into a thin rectangle, then roll tightly while tucking in the sides, then pinch the seams to seal (watch video).
4. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet and quickly brush with some egg wash and top with sesame seeds (optional).
5. The only time your dough will sit (for 5-10 minutes) is while you preheat your oven to 425 degrees. Bake for 8-15 minutes, until golden. Allow to cool and enjoy!!!
