ORIGINS OF THE HAMBURGER
The hamburger originated from 19th-century German "Hamburg steak" (minced, seasoned beef) brought to the US, which was placed between bread for portability at late-1800s American fairs and food carts. While creators like Charlie Nagreen (1885) and the Menches Brothers (1885) are credited with early versions, White Castle popularised the modern sandwich in 1921.

KEY HISTORICAL MOMENTS IN BURGER DEVELOPMENT:
13th Century Origins: Mongol riders under Genghis Khan tenderized raw mutton under their saddles, a practice that evolved into minced meat dishes, such as steak tartare, which traveled to Europe.

The "Hamburg Steak" (1800s): German immigrants in Hamburg, and later in New York, popularized a chopped, seasoned beef patty. Delmonico's Restaurant in NYC was one of the first to list it on their menu in 1873.

The Transformation to “Sandwich” (1885–1900):
Charlie Nagreen (1885): Flattened a meatball at the Seymour Fair in Wisconsin to make it portable, calling it "Hamburger Charlie".

Frank and Charles Menches (1885): Ran out of pork at the Erie County Fair in Hamburg, NY and substituted seasoned ground beef between bread.

Louis Lassen (1900): Served a ground beef patty between toasted bread at his lunch wagon, Louis' Lunch in New Haven, CT.

Fast Food Era (1920s–1950s):
White Castle (1921): Walter Anderson and Edgar Ingram founded the first fast-food chain in Wichita, Kansas, standardizing the "slider".

McDonald's (1950s): Ray Kroc expanded the chain based on the McDonald brothers’, transforming the industry.

CONTROVERSY OVER ORIGINS
Because the burger evolved from a common dish (the Hamburg steak) in several locations simultaneously, it is difficult to pin its invention on a single person or place. Other, less-frequently cited inventors include Fletcher Davis in Athens, Texas, and Oscar Weber Bilby in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

CONCLUSION
Hamburgers are typically associated with fast food “restaurants” and diners but are also sold at other restaurants, including high-end establishments. There are many international and regional variations of hamburgers. Some of the largest multinational fast-food chains feature burgers as one of their core products: McDonald’s Big Mac and Burger King's Whopper have become global icons of American culture.
