Some sandwiches are fancy. Others are beloved by just about everyone.

The mortadella sandwich is one of Italy’s great equalizers, enjoyed by people of every age and background. At its simplest, it’s nothing more than good bread and plenty of mortadella, but there are a few ways to take this classic combination to another level.

In this video, we start with the simplest version possible, move on to a beloved Roman delicacy, and finish with an over-the-top version that might just be my favorite Italian sandwich.

Sometimes the simplest foods are the hardest to beat.
