Summer at Nonna’s.
Comment “RECIPE” and I’ll send you my nonna’s full recipe.
These are my nonna’s stuffed zucchini, one of the summer recipes I grew up eating every year.
She cuts the zucchini into pieces, hollows out the center by hand, fills them with a simple mixture of beef, pork, egg, Parmigiano, salt, pepper and basil, then cooks them slowly in tomato sauce until the zucchini become soft and the filling is tender.
When I was little, I ate this so often that at some point I thought I was tired of it.
Now I understand that these were the recipes that built my childhood.
Simple ingredients.A pan full of tomato sauce.Bread on the table. And my nonna cooking like it was the most normal thing in the world.
But it wasn’t normal.
It was Italian home cooking, Italian grandma cooking, authentic Italian food, traditional Italian recipes, stuffed zucchini, zucchini recipes, summer vegetables, tomato sauce recipes, meat filled vegetables, cucina povera, Mediterranean food, healthy comfort food, family dinner, Sunday lunch, farm to table cooking, garden recipes, seasonal cooking, homemade Italian meals, recipes from Nonna, childhood food memories, slow cooked food, rustic Italian cooking, Tuscan home cooking, real Italian cuisine, old fashioned recipes, easy Italian dinner, ground beef recipes, ground pork recipes, Parmigiano Reggiano, basil recipes, summer dinner ideas, comfort food, and the kind of food no restaurant could ever make taste the same.
I asked her to make them again with me.
Same hands.Same gestures.Same smell in the kitchen.
And suddenly I remembered why I loved them so much.
Serve them warm, with plenty of tomato sauce and bread for scarpetta.
Because honestly, the sauce might be the best part.
