Pepperoni may be the most famous “Italian” pizza topping in America, but you won’t find the same thing on a traditional Italian menu.

The sausage we know as pepperoni developed in the United States as part of Italian-American food culture, likely drawing inspiration from the spicy cured meats immigrants already knew from southern Italy. Calabria, in particular, is famous for spicy salumi flavored with local chili peppers.

And there’s another reason to be careful when ordering: **peperoni** in Italian means **peppers**. So asking for a pizza with “pepperoni” in Italy might get you a much more vegetable-forward lunch than you expected.
