I Left Everything for the Real Japan. Here’s What It Actually Costs

We bought a house in rural Japan for $3,000. No rent, no mortgage — so how much does it actually cost for two people to live here? We tracked every single yen for over three months, down to the 140-yen coffees, to find out.

Turns out "no rent" doesn't mean "no expenses." Property tax, electricity (that air conditioner is great in summer), water, gas, two phones because we still don't have wifi, way more ramen and sushi than we planned on, the yearly shaken inspection on our car, and one very Japanese expense that most other countries don't have at all: the local onsen.

Add it all up, and here's what a month of rural Japan life actually costs us — and it's honestly more comfortable than we expected for two people in a $3,000 akiya.

The full renovation costs are their own video (coming soon) — this one's just what it costs to live here month to month.
