WAYS I STAY COOL IN A HEAT WAVE. Today I’m sharing with you ways I stay cool in a heatwave. It’s hot most places right now but there are things we can do to be more comfortable. Here is my list:
STAYING COOL WHEN IT’S HOT
1. Keep the curtains, drapes and blinds closed during the day.
2. Avoid opening and closing the doors as much as possible. I know this can be difficult with pets or if you don’t live alone. It is amazing how much you can raise the indoor temperature just by opening the door many times a day.
3. Avoid using the stove, oven or any cooking appliances that generate heat. Alternatives might be, pressure cooking devices, air fryer (shorter cook time), most countertop cooking devices and outdoor cooking.
4. Avoid using heat generating appliances like dishwasher, clothes dryer, food dehydrators, even laundry that requires hot water or even hot showers until after sundown. Also try to fit in outdoor chores in the morning or evening.
5. Make good use of fans. Which includes free standing and ceiling fans. Together with AC fans help to circulate the cool air making your AC more efficient.
6. Dehumidifiers are very efficient at keeping the humidity low in your home. It is important to keep the air dry on hot humid days. Better for you and better for your home. You will be amazed at how much cooler you feel.
7. Make sure filters are clean regardless of whether you have window AC units or central air. Also check your dehumidifier filter. This bit of maintenance will enable your cooling appliances to work more efficiently.
EAT COOLING FOODS
Various foods have an effect on body temperature. And beverages do as well. Here are some food suggestions that can help you feel cooler. Can be useful during a heatwave.
1. Fruits and vegetables with a high water content.
2. Avoid heavy sauces or dressings. A vinaigrette is nice
3. Avoid fried foods when possible. Also heavy soups. Clear soups are cooling.
4. Less heavy meats such as white fish, tuna and chicken. Heavier meats such as beef or pork cause the body to heat up during digestion.
5. Go lighter on the spice when preparing meals
6. Consuming alcohol and sugar makes the body heat up. Sipping room temperature water plain or with lemon, cucumber, mint tea or herbal tea is cooling to the body.
7. Eat less or eat smaller meals. Overeating will definitely make it more difficult to stay cool in a heatwave.
I hope this helps. Everyone’s needs and circumstance is different. The suggestions won’t apple to everyone but might be useful.
If you have any tried and true methods you use to stay cool share them with us in the comments.
