Hello, dear friends—it’s Grandma Joan. Today I’m inviting you into my kitchen to show you one of my favorite frugal meals for seniors: my homemade red beans and rice with Polish sausage, made right in my trusty old crockpot.
At 92 years old, I still enjoy cooking simple, hearty meals from scratch—and I especially love finding ways to make my Social Security grocery budget stretch. In this video, I’m sharing how I turn inexpensive dried pinto beans, rice, onions, green peppers, and Polish sausage into a delicious meal that gives me multiple servings for the freezer. It’s budget-friendly cooking, meal prepping for one, and old-fashioned home cooking all in one.
I’ve always loved dried beans because they’re so economical and so comforting. I soak my pinto beans overnight, let them simmer slowly all day in the crockpot, and by supper time I have a warm, flavorful meal that reminds me of travels to Louisiana and all the wonderful red beans and rice I enjoyed there.
One of the blessings of cooking this way is that I can make one meal and enjoy it for days. I portion leftovers into freezer containers so I always have homemade meals ready—whether it’s soups, casseroles, or this delicious crockpot beans and rice recipe. It helps me stay independent, save money, and eat healthy at the same time.
In this video, I share:
✨ How I make budget-friendly red beans and rice
✨ My simple crockpot cooking routine
✨ How I stretch groceries on a fixed income
✨ Why I love freezer meal prep for seniors
✨ Easy ways to cook for one without waste
✨ My favorite tips for frugal living and healthy aging
Cooking doesn’t have to be complicated—or expensive—to be comforting. Sometimes the simplest meals are the very best, especially when they fill your home with wonderful smells and your freezer with ready-made suppers.
Thank you so much for spending time with me and being interested in a 92-year-old grandma and great-grandma. Your kindness, comments, and encouragement mean more than you know.
If you enjoy videos about senior living, frugal cooking, healthy aging, independent living, grocery budgeting, and old-fashioned recipes, I’d love for you to subscribe and join me for more simple moments from my kitchen and my life.
With love,
Grandma Joan
